Pollarding is a method of pruning that keeps trees and shrubs smaller than they would naturally grow. It is normally started once a tree or shrub reaches a certain height. Trees can then be re-pollarded every 3-5 years to maintain their size and shape.

Pollarded trees may look unsightly at first, however when done correctly and at the right time of year the tree will quickly re-shoot and form an attractive shape.

Pollarding is a pruning technique used for many reasons, including:

· Preventing trees and shrubs outgrowing their allotted space.
· Pollarding can reduce the shade cast by a tree.
· May be necessary on street trees to prevent electric wires and streetlights being obstructed.
